Mount Edith is a tall mountain found in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It stands proudly in the Bow River valley, part of the Sawback Range within the larger Canadian Rockies.
This mountain has three main peaks made of limestone: a south peak, a center peak, and a north peak. The south peak is the tallest. You can climb all three peaks by a method called scrambling, which is like a mix of hiking and easy rock climbing. The south peak is the most challenging to scramble on its west side.
Mount Edith got its name in 1886. It was named after Edith Orde. She worked as an assistant to Lady Agnes Macdonald. Lady Agnes was the wife of Canada's very first prime minister.
What is Mount Edith Made Of?
Mount Edith is mostly made of a type of rock called limestone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock. This means it formed over a very long time from layers of tiny bits of sand, mud, and shells that settled at the bottom of ancient seas.
The limestone that makes up Mount Edith was formed during the Devonian period. This was a time in Earth's history about 419 to 359 million years ago. Later, during an event called the Laramide orogeny, huge forces pushed these rock layers eastward. This caused them to fold and break, eventually forming the mountains we see today.
Weather at Mount Edith
Mount Edith has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold and snowy winters. Summers are usually mild, which is a nice break from the cold.
During winter, temperatures can easily drop below -20 degrees Celsius. With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 degrees Celsius! The best time to visit Mount Edith for climbing is during the summer months. The weather is much milder then, making it safer and more enjoyable for outdoor activities.
