Mount Kerkeslin is a tall mountain in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. It stands 2,956 m (9,698 ft) high. This makes it the highest point in the Maligne Range.

You can find Mount Kerkeslin in the southern part of the Maligne Range. It is east of the Icefields Parkway. You can even see it from the Athabasca Falls lookout!

The mountain is made of sedimentary rock. This rock formed a very long time ago, during the Cambrian period. Later, during an event called the Laramide orogeny, these rocks were pushed up and over younger rocks.

What's in a Name?

The name "Mount Kerkeslin" was given in 1859. This happened during the Palliser expedition, led by James Hector. However, no one knows for sure where the name "Kerkeslin" came from. It remains a bit of a mystery!

Weather Around Mount Kerkeslin

Mount Kerkeslin has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold, snowy winters. The summers are usually mild.

Winter temperatures can drop below -20 °C. With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 °C. The snow and rain that fall on Mount Kerkeslin eventually flow into the Athabasca River.
