A Tragic Event in 1962
On September 10, 1962, a sad event happened near Mount Kit Carson. A U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker airplane was flying towards Fairchild Air Force Base. The base is west of Spokane.
The plane was flying in thick fog. It accidentally flew into a deep valley on Mount Kit Carson. This accident was a very serious one. It was caused by the crew making a mistake in navigation.
At the time, this was the worst aviation accident in U.S. history. As of October 2012, it was still the third worst accident involving a KC-135 plane.
