Exploring Mount Louisa's Geography

Mount Louisa suburb is located west of the main Townsville CBD (Central Business District). The mountain itself is a notable landmark. It starts at just 10 meters above sea level. Then it rises up to a peak of 193 meters.

Most of the houses and residential areas are on the flat land. This land is found to the north and south of the mountain. There's also a small industrial area. You can find this area along the northern edge of the suburb.

Two main roads help people get around. North Townsville Road goes from west to east. Garbutt–Upper Ross Road runs along part of the southern border.

A Glimpse into Mount Louisa's Past

Mount Louisa played an important role during World War II. A large military base, known as Depot #2, was set up at the base of the mountain. As many as 4,000 American soldiers worked and lived there.

The soldiers had a special place for entertainment. It was called Helton Hall. This was an open-air building. It was named after Master Sergeant Helton. He sadly died in a plane crash.

Many famous Hollywood stars visited Helton Hall. They came to entertain the troops. Some of these stars included John Wayne, Joe E. Brown, and Gary Cooper. Actresses Una Merkel and Phyllis Brook also performed. Even Woody Herman's famous orchestra played music there.

Mount Louisa is home to Calvary Christian College. This is a private school for both primary and secondary students. It teaches children from Prep (the first year of school) all the way to Year 12.
