Mount Macoun is a tall mountain in Glacier National Park in British Columbia, Canada. It stands at 3,030 meters (9,941 feet) high. This mountain is part of the Selkirk Mountains range.
It is quite far from cities. Mount Macoun is about 61 kilometers (38 miles) east of Revelstoke. It is also about 32 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of Golden.
Nearby, you can find other peaks. Mount Fox is 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) to the southwest. Mount Topham is 4.4 kilometers (2.7 miles) to the south.
Large ice fields are also close by. The huge Illecillewaet Névé ice field is to the northwest. Two smaller glaciers sit at the base of the mountain's steep east side. Water from the mountain flows into the Beaver River.
Naming Mount Macoun
Mount Macoun was named in 1888. Two mountaineers, Reverend William S. Green and Reverend Henry Swanzy, chose the name. They wanted to honor John Macoun (1831-1920).
John Macoun was a famous Canadian botanist and naturalist. He worked for the Geological Survey of Canada. The mountain's name became official on September 8, 1932. This was decided by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
First Climbers
The first time someone successfully climbed Mount Macoun was in August 1902. Reverend J. C. Herdman made the climb. He was helped by a guide named Edouard Feuz, Sr.
Weather and Climate
Mount Macoun is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has very cold, snowy winters. The summers are usually mild.
Temperatures can drop very low. They can go below −20 °C (−4 °F). With wind, it can feel even colder, below −30 °C (−22 °F). The best time to visit or climb Mount Macoun is from July to September. The weather is usually more pleasant during these months.
