Mount Spetch is a mountain in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It stands about 2,579 meters (8,461 feet) tall. This peak is part of the Coast Mountains and is located inside Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.
Mount Spetch belongs to a group of mountains called the Joffre Group. This group is a smaller part of the Lillooet Ranges. The mountain is about 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Pemberton. It sits between two other mountains, Mount Matier and Slalok Mountain.
The mountain was named after Samuel W. Spetch. He was a local business owner who ran a general store in Birken and other shops in Pemberton. The name was officially recognized on January 23, 1979. The first people to climb Mount Spetch were J. Oswald and G. Walter in 1971. Water from the mountain flows into Joffre Creek and Twin One Creek. These creeks then join the Lillooet River. The mountain's weather helps support the Matier Glacier, which is on its northern side.
Weather at Mount Spetch
Mount Spetch has a subarctic climate. This means it gets very cold, especially in winter. Most of the weather comes from the Pacific Ocean. When these weather systems reach the Coast Mountains, they are forced upwards. This causes them to drop a lot of rain or snow.
Because of this, the Coast Mountains get a lot of precipitation. This is especially true in winter, when heavy snowfall is common. Temperatures can drop below −20 degrees Celsius (–4 degrees Fahrenheit). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 degrees Celsius (–22 degrees Fahrenheit). The best time to climb Mount Spetch is usually from July to September. This is when the weather is most favorable.
