The name "Tamborine" comes from the Yugambeh language, spoken by the Aboriginal people of this area. It means "wild lime," named after the finger lime trees that grow there. Over time, the spelling of Tamborine changed a few times.
Early Days and Growth
A post office opened in Mount Tamborine in March 1924. Before that, there was a smaller "receiving office" for mail since 1881. This shows how the community grew over the years.
Becoming Part of Tamborine Mountain
In 1997, Mount Tamborine joined with two other nearby areas, North Tamborine and Eagle Heights. Together, they formed the bigger area we now know as Tamborine Mountain. All these places share the same postcode, 4272.
