About Mount Tom

Mount Tom is part of the Willey Range, which is a section of the larger White Mountains. It is next to Mount Field on its south side.

Water from Mount Tom flows in two main directions. On the east, Crawford Brook carries water away. On the west, the Zealand River does the same. Both of these streams eventually join the Ammonoosuc River. The Ammonoosuc River then flows into the Connecticut River, which finally reaches Long Island Sound.

Who Was Tom Crawford?

Mount Tom is named after Thomas Crawford. His family owned and managed three inns in the area around Crawford Notch in the early to mid-1800s.

From 1829 until about 1850, Thomas Crawford was the person in charge of the Notch House. This inn was located right at the top of Crawford Notch. Around 1850, Thomas Crawford started building a much bigger hotel. However, he faced money problems and had to sell his property. After this, he left the Notch area. The hotel he started eventually became the well-known Crawford House.

Skiing Near Mount Tom

In the early 1970s, there was a plan to build a ski area on the northern side of Mount Tom. This idea was connected to a famous skier named Tom Corcoran and the Crawford House hotel. However, this ski area was never built.
