Mount Vernon is a city in Ohio, United States. It is the main city, or county seat, of Knox County. The city is located along the Kokosing River and is about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Columbus. In 2020, about 16,956 people lived there.

History of Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon was officially started in 1805. It was named after Mount Vernon, which was the home of George Washington.
In May 1953, a big fire destroyed the phone system for the whole city. This meant people couldn't make calls for several months.
In January 1959, a very bad flood happened. About 500 homes had to be emptied, and the flood caused about $5 million in damage.
Historic Places to Visit
The Woodward Opera House is in downtown Mount Vernon. It is the oldest opera theater of its kind in the United States. After many years of being fixed up, it is now a place for cultural events and shows.
The Knox County Historical Society has its main office on Harcourt Road. It has a building with many interesting exhibits. These exhibits share information about famous people like Daniel Decatur Emmett and Paul Lynde.
Geography and Nature

Mount Vernon covers about 9.60 square miles (24.86 square km). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The city is in an area called the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau. This means it has rolling hills and valleys around it.
The Kokosing River flows through the city. Also, a major road called U.S. Route 36 passes through Mount Vernon.

In 2010, there were 16,990 people living in Mount Vernon. The city had about 7,110 households. Most of the people living in the city were White (95.3%).

Economy and Jobs
Mount Vernon is where Cooper Industries first started. There is a large industrial area in the western part of the city. Companies there make and fix products for the gas and oil power industries.
One of these companies, Siemens, bought a plant in Mount Vernon. However, they announced in 2018 that the plant would close by 2019.
Ariel Corporation is another big company in Mount Vernon. They make special machines called compressors for natural gas. One of Ariel's founders used to work for Cooper Industries in Mount Vernon.
Two universities nearby also provide many jobs for local people. These are Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon and Kenyon College in nearby Gambier, Ohio.
