Naming Mount Victoria

How the Mountain Got Its Name

Mount Victoria was named a long time ago, around the 1860s. This happened during a special survey done by a British ship called HMS Plumper. A survey is when people carefully map out an area. The crew of the HMS Plumper explored and charted, or mapped, this whole region.

They decided to name the mountain after Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom. She was the ninth and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. So, the mountain carries a name connected to British royalty!

First Climbers

Who First Reached the Top?

The very first time someone successfully climbed to the top of Mount Victoria was in 1929. This exciting achievement was made by two climbers: Arthur Tinniswood Dalton and Percy Williams Easthope. They were the first to explore and reach the summit of this impressive peak.
