Hiking Mullach Glas offers amazing views and a good challenge. There are a few ways to reach its summit.
Popular Hiking Routes
- Máméan Roundtrip: The easiest way to climb Mullach Glas is from the Máméan pass. This trip is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) long. It usually takes 4 to 5 hours to complete the roundtrip.
- Ridge Walk Traverse: You can also hike across the ridge. This route starts from Corcogemore in the east. You then cross Mullach Glas and continue to the summit of Binn Mhór. The hike finishes down at Máméan. This route is also about 10 kilometers and takes 4 to 5 hours. However, you will need two cars for this route. One car would be at the start and one at the end.
The Maamturks Challenge
Mullach Glas is also part of a very long and tough hike. It is called the Maamturks Challenge. This challenge is a 25-kilometer (about 15.5 miles) walk. It takes 10 to 12 hours to complete. Hikers walk over the entire Maumturks range. The route goes from Maam Cross to Leenaun.
This challenge is known as one of the "great classic ridge-walks of Ireland." It is considered an "extreme grade" hike. This is because of the huge total climb of about 7,600 feet. Since 1975, the University College Galway Mountaineering Club has hosted this annual event. They set up checkpoints along the way. One checkpoint is west of Mullach Glas in the Máméan pass. Another is east of Mullach Glas on Corcogemore.
