Mushy peas facts for kids
Mushy peas are a popular side dish in the British Isles, especially in Northern England and the Midlands. They are made from dried marrowfat peas that are cooked until they become soft and "mushy." People often eat them with fish and chips, which is a very traditional British meal.
Mushy peas are also a key part of a snack called pie and peas. This is a meat pie served with a generous helping of mushy peas. Different Ways to Enjoy Mushy Peas
In some parts of England, like Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and parts of Lincolnshire, mushy peas are eaten as a snack all by themselves. In Nottinghamshire, they are often served with mint sauce and sold at outdoor events like fairs.
If you're in Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire, you might hear of a "pea mix." This is simply mushy peas served with chips (which are like French fries). Mushy peas are also well-liked in Scotland. There, they are served with fish and chips, or sometimes as a wetter dish with vinegar in a bowl.
Black Peas
A special type of pea dish, popular around Bolton and Bury in Greater Manchester, and Preston, Lancashire, is called parched peas. These are carlin peas (also known as maple peas or black peas) that are soaked and then boiled slowly for a long time. They are traditionally served with vinegar. Some people even jokingly call mushy peas "Yorkshire caviar" because they are so popular in that region!
Why are Mushy Peas Green?
When mushy peas are made commercially (meaning, sold in stores), they often have extra colouring added to make them look bright green. Without these added colours, the dish would actually look more of a murky grey.
Manufacturers use different colours to get that classic green look. For example, they might use a mix of Brilliant Blue FCF (E133) and riboflavin (E101).
