Mutant League was an animated TV show based on the video games Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey. It aired from July 2, 1994, to February 24, 1996. The show had two seasons with a total of 40 episodes. The first season had 13 episodes, and the second had 27. Claster Television distributed the series, and Franklin/Waterman 2 Productions made it with Electronic Arts.

Story of Mutant League

The story of Mutant League begins during a football game. A big earthquake happens, and it uncovers hidden toxic waste. The strange fumes from this waste cause everyone nearby to change into mutants! This includes a young boy named Bones Justice.

After this, a new sports group called the Mutant League is created for these super-powered beings. Bones Justice grows up to become a player for the Midway Monsters team. The league's boss, Zalgor Prigg, is very sneaky and dishonest. He always tries to get Bones, who is very popular, to play for one of his own teams. If Bones refuses, Prigg tries to make him look bad.

Bones is also searching for his father. He also wants to bring fairness and order to the league. These are important parts of the show's story. Other characters from the video games, like Razor Kidd, Mo and Spew, K.T. Slayer, Grim McSlam, and Coach McWimple, also appear often in the series.

Unlike the video games, players in the show don't die from the rough sports. Even if they get hurt badly and lose body parts, they can be fixed! They use a special machine called the Rejuvenator. This machine bathes them in toxic chemicals, and they quickly become healthy again.

The show also has no robot players, except for one episode. There are only five teams: the Monsters, the Slayers, the Ooze, the Derangers, and the Screaming Evils. The teams play many different sports, not just football and hockey. They play basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and even monster truck races and sumo wrestling. Just like in the video games, these sports have dangerous traps and very few rules about violence. This is because the mutant players are almost impossible to destroy. Some episodes end with a "grudge match" between two specific players.

Characters

Many interesting characters make up the world of Mutant League.

Midway Monsters

  • Bones Justice: He is the main hero of the show. Bones is an animated human skeleton. He joined the Monsters because it was the only team that Prigg didn't own. Bones wants to find Prigg to learn the truth about his father, Butch Justice. He always wears shades, and his eyes glow red when he gets angry.
  • Razor Kidd: This mutant was kicked off the Slayers team and then joined the Monsters. He and Bones start as rivals but become good friends.
  • Mo and Spewter: These two troll brothers are very strong but not very smart. They share one brain, which they keep in one of their flip-top skullcaps.
  • Darkstar: A tough mutant who loves to fight. After accidentally knocking down Prigg, he was sent to the Monsters as punishment. He and Bones didn't get along at first, but he learned to play fairly. He is still tough on anyone who threatens his teammates.
  • Thrasher: She is Malone's daughter. She looks like a gargoyle with orange skin and a yellow fin on her head. She and Darkstar often argue. Thrasher was the first female player in the Mutant League, which caused some arguments, but she proved herself to the team.
  • Elanore McWhimple: She is the owner of the Midway Monsters team.
  • Malicious Malone: He used to be a Mutant League player. Now, he is the Head Coach of the Midway Monsters.
  • George McWhimple: He is Elanore McWhimple's husband.
  • Slick Toxin: A mutant high school athlete recruited by Bones Justice. In one episode, he decides to leave the league and go back to school after talking with Bones.
  • Cannonball: A mutant who was the Monsters' baseball pitcher.

Slay City Slayers

  • K.T. Slayer: A strong troll with a very aggressive attitude. Slayer is Prigg's main helper and the captain of the Slayers team. He is Bones's biggest rival and will do almost anything to stop Bones.
  • Jackie LaGrunge: A dangerous player with nine years of experience. This former hybrid has become even more deadly as a "whiptoid."

Derangers

  • Joe Magician: A mutant named after the famous football player Joe Montana. He is the team captain of the Derangers.
  • Grim McSlam: A mutant with four arms, named after Jim McMahon.

Screaming Evils

  • Madman: A crazy hyena man who is the team captain of the Evils.
  • Madboy: He is the son of Madman.

Ooze

  • Liquid Lazer: He is the team captain of the Ooze. Among the team captains, he is the least willing to follow Prigg's orders. His body can turn into liquid and then come back together whenever he wants.

Other Characters

  • Bob Babble: He is the main announcer for MLSN (Mutant League Sports Network). He is often seen and heard, and his voice sounds like the famous sports announcer Howard Cosell.
  • Sherry Steele: She is MLSN's human female reporter. She is secretly an ally of the Monsters. She becomes good friends with Bones and often helps him make good choices. In the last episode, she tells Bones she loves him before he goes underground to find his father.
  • Zalgor Prigg: He is the dishonest boss of the Mutant League and owns the Slay City Slayers. He used to be a greedy businessman when he was human. He is the main bad guy in the show. He eats live spiders from a box on his desk. He is also a bit sensitive about the "knobs" that grow on top of his head.
  • Kang: A werewolf with a hairstyle like Don King. He is Prigg's personal assistant. Prigg often hits him when he brings bad news. His biggest fear is being thrown into a fiery pit of "demonic lawyers."
  • Jukka: A scientist who works for Prigg. He has purple skin and always wears dark goggles. He runs the rejuvenation tanks. Even though he works for Prigg, he is often neutral and has even helped the Midway Monsters sometimes.
