The Mytilus unguiculatus, also known as the Korean mussel or hard-shelled mussel, is a type of mussel. It is a bivalve mollusc that lives in the sea. This mussel belongs to the family Mytilidae. People in Korea and China farm these mussels a lot for food. They can also attach to objects underwater, which is called macrofouling.
Where Mussels Live
You can find the Korean mussel along the coasts of the warmer western Pacific Ocean. They live in places like China, Japan, Korea, and the Far East of Russia. These mussels are common in the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. They can be found as far north as the Peter the Great Gulf.
Korean mussels usually live in the upper part of the sublittoral zone. This is the area of the ocean floor that is always covered by water, even at low tide. Sometimes, M. unguiculatus has been found on floating debris near Vancouver Island. Scientists think these mussels might have traveled there after the 2011 Tōhoku tsunami in Japan.
