Nagar Valley is a beautiful area in Pakistan. It used to be a small independent state, but now it's one of the ten districts in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. You can find it along the famous Karakoram Highway, north of the city of Gilgit.
It's surrounded by amazing high mountains like Rakaposhi (7,788 meters tall!), Diran, Golden Peak, and Rush Peak. The valley is split into two main parts: Nagar-I and Nagar-II. Many villages are part of these areas, like Sumayar, Hoper Valley, and Hispar. People in Nagar mostly speak Burushaski and Shina languages.
The Rush Lake is also in this valley. It's the highest alpine lake in Pakistan and the 27th highest in the whole world!

Exploring Nagar Valley's Geography
The Nagar Valley is a very mountainous place. It has lots of hills and tall mountains. Even though it's so mountainous, it's easy to get around. The huge Karakoram mountain range surrounds the entire area. This includes the mighty Rakaposhi peak. About 90% of Nagar Valley is higher than 3,000 meters above sea level. A big part, 30%, is even higher than 5,000 meters!
Nagar Valley's Past
Nagar was an independent state for over 1,200 years. The British took control of Nagar during a war. This war is known locally as Jangir-e-Lae. It was fought between the people of Nagar and the British army. This happened at a place called Nilt from December 1 to 23, 1891.
The people of Nagar fought very bravely. Their leader was Tham (Chief) Azur Khan. They resisted the British for more than 20 days. However, they were defeated because they didn't have enough weapons. Over 100 people from Nagar lost their lives. On the British side, four officers and more than 50 soldiers died.
Even after this war, Nagar remained a small independent state. Later, in 1948, Nagar joined Pakistan. It still kept its special status as a princely state for many years.
Changes in Nagar's Government
In the 1960s, people in Nagar started to protest. They were unhappy with the ruler, called the Mir. They wanted to stop forced labor and lower taxes. In 1970, they marched to Gilgit to share their demands. There was a conflict where people were hurt. Nine people died and many were wounded. The protest leaders were put in prison.
However, things changed on September 25, 1974. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, made a big decision. He ended the princely states of Nagar and Hunza. He also freed the prisoners. This change gave the people of Nagar a voice in their government. They got democratic representation in the Northern Areas Council. This is now called the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly.
