The Natevier River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows entirely within the town of Chibougamau. This river is a branch of the Oreille River. The Oreille River eventually connects to a much larger network of rivers that lead all the way to James Bay.

The area around the Natevier River can be reached by Quebec route 167. This road also helps people get to Waconichi Lake and the Waconichi River. The surface of the Natevier River is usually frozen from early November until mid-May. However, it's safest to walk or play on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

River's Journey and Surroundings

The Natevier River starts at Cummings Lake. This lake is about 1.2 kilometers long and sits at an elevation of 414 meters. Cummings Lake is found in the Roy township, near Mount Cummings, which is 600 meters tall. There are about twenty cottages built on the north shore of Cummings Lake.

From Cummings Lake, the Natevier River flows for about 10.8 kilometers.

  • It first goes north, following Quebec route 167.
  • Then, it turns northeast, still following the road. It passes through a marshy area and a small lake.
  • Finally, it continues northeast, making a loop to the east of route 167 (Québec). It also collects water from Lake Vignon before reaching its end.

The Natevier River flows into the Oreille River. The Oreille River then joins the Blondeau River (Chibougamau Lake). The Blondeau River flows into McKenzie Bay, which is part of Chibougamau Lake.

From Chibougamau Lake, the water travels through Dorés Lake (Chibougamau River). Then, it flows into the Chibougamau River. The Chibougamau River eventually meets the Opawica River.

After this, the water continues through the Waswanipi River to Goéland Lake (Waswanipi River). The Waswanipi River then flows into Lake Matagami. Finally, the water joins the Nottaway River, which empties into Rupert Bay, a part of James Bay. This shows how many rivers and lakes are connected in this large water system!

How the River Got Its Name

The Natevier River is named after Father Pierre Natevier. He was a Sulpician, a type of priest, who was born in France in 1697. He came to Montreal in 1722.

The name "Rivière Natevier" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was the same day the Commission de toponymie du Québec, the organization that names places in Quebec, was founded.
