National Capital Parks-East (NACE) is a special group of parks and historic places managed by the National Park Service. These amazing spots are located east of the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and also in Maryland. They protect important natural areas, historical sites, and places for people to enjoy the outdoors.
NACE looks after many different places, including:
- Anacostia Park
- Baltimore-Washington Parkway
- Buzzard Point Park and Buzzard Point Marina
- Capitol Hill Parks
- Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site
- Civil War Defenses of Washington – Fort Circle Parks – This includes old Civil War forts and the parkways that connect them, from Fort Greble to Fort Mahan.
- Fort Davis Park
- Fort Dupont Park
- Fort Foote Park
- Fort Stanton
- Fort Washington Park
- Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
- Greenbelt Park
- Harmony Hall
- James Creek Marina
- Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens

If you want to learn more about National Capital Parks-East or visit some of these cool places, here's where you can find information:
NACE Headquarters
The main office for NACE is located in Anacostia Park at 1900 Anacostia Drive, SE. It's not a visitor center, but it has an information desk in the lobby. You can visit Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Visitor Centers and Historic Sites
Several parks and historic sites have visitor centers or contact stations where you can get more information and explore:
- Fort Washington Park: This park has a visitor center that is open every day. From April to October, it's open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the rest of the year, it closes at 4:00 PM.
- Frederick Douglass National Historic Site: You can visit this historic site daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM between April and October. For the rest of the year, it closes a bit earlier at 4:30 PM.
- Greenbelt Park: The Ranger Station at Greenbelt Park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM. The Park Headquarters is also open five days a week during the same hours.
- Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens: This beautiful park has a book store and a contact station. They are open every day from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site: This site is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from April to October. During the other months, it closes at 4:30 PM.
