The National Weather Service Nashville is a very important office that helps keep people safe in 38 counties across Middle Tennessee. Their main job is to watch the weather very closely. They give out forecasts (what the weather will be like), send out warnings if dangerous weather is coming, and share local weather updates. They also provide special weather information for airplanes.
This office uses advanced tools to help them forecast. They have a WSR-88D (NEXRAD) radar, which is like a powerful weather eye that sees storms far away. They also use an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), which automatically collects weather data from the ground. These tools greatly improve their ability to predict the weather. Even though it's called the Nashville office, it's actually located near Old Hickory, Tennessee, in Wilson County, Tennessee, right by Old Hickory Lake.
The Weather Service Office of Nashville has been recognized for its excellent work. They won the United States Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award three times. This award is given for outstanding federal service. They received it in December 1998, May 2007, and April 2010. Each time, it was for providing life-saving services during major tornado outbreaks in Middle Tennessee. These big storms happened in April 1998, April 2006, and February 2008.
