History of Nauvoo
Nauvoo was started in 1888. This was when the Northern Alabama Railway was being built. The town used to be a big center for coal mining. Before it was called Nauvoo, the area had small farms. These farms were known as Blackwell's Crossing and Ingle Mills. They were named after important local landowners.
The railway construction helped the town grow. It grew on land owned by Joshua Blackwell. However, he did not want the new town named after him. A local person named Tom Carroll suggested the name "Nauvoo." He named it after Nauvoo, Illinois. That city was founded by a Mormon leader named Joseph Smith. Tom Carroll had visited the Illinois town and liked it.
By 1891, Nauvoo was already a busy place. A local newspaper called it a "flourishing town." It had three stores and a steam gin. A steam gin was a machine used to separate cotton fibers. Nauvoo officially became a town in 1906.
