A Look Back: Needmore's History

Needmore began around 1904. Some of the first families to settle here were the Beasley, Green, Brock, and Gibson families. A school was started in 1904. It became one of the first four school districts in Terry County.

By the late 1960s, Needmore had a general store and a cotton gin. The population was very small, only four people. Today, only the cotton gin is still working. In the year 2000, the community had a population of 55 people.

The Land Around Needmore

The land around Needmore is very flat. It used to be covered with grasslands. Large herds of bison once grazed here. Today, the bison are gone. The natural shortgrass prairie has been replaced by farms. Farmers grow crops like cotton, sorghum, and winter wheat.

There are no flowing rivers or streams near Needmore anymore. However, a dry stream channel called Lost Draw passes south of the community. Many shallow lakes, called "playas," are scattered across the landscape. These playas usually fill with water after it rains. But they dry up and stay dry for long periods. Some of the larger playas to the southeast, like Rich Lake and Mound Lake, are important. They provide a safe place for migratory waterfowl. These birds fly between Canada and Mexico.
