History of New Albany
How New Albany Began
The land where New Albany now stands was first settled in 1837. Two people named Nobel Landon and William Yantis started the community. They divided the land into small plots and sold them to new families. Some people think the name "New Albany" came from settlers who moved from the Albany, New York area. For a while, the community was also called "Hope."
In 1856, New Albany officially became a village. It had about 50 residents at that time. S. Ogden was elected as the first mayor. A lumber mill, which later became the New Albany Mill, opened in 1881. In 1922, Mrs. Edward Babbitt became the first woman mayor of New Albany.
New Albany's Growth Over Time
In 1970, New Albany was much smaller than it is today. It was just a small part of Plain Township and did not even touch Columbus. The first yearly New Albany Founders' Day Celebration happened in 1976. By 1980, only 414 people lived in the village.
New Albany started to grow very quickly in the 1990s. This was partly because of the growth of the Les Wexner clothing business. Les Wexner built a very large house in the village. Roads like State Route 161 were improved. This made it easier to get to and from New Albany by freeway. The New Albany Mill, which had been a hardware store, closed in 2008 after 119 years.
