Newbottle is a village in the Sunderland area of Tyne and Wear, England. It's located about 8 miles (13 km) from Durham and 5 miles (8 km) from Sunderland. Long ago, it was part of County Durham.

Where is Newbottle Located?

Newbottle is surrounded by other villages and areas. These include Grasswell, Shiney Row, Herrington Burn, and Success/Philadelphia.

The village has good road connections. The A690 road, which goes to Durham and Sunderland, is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east. The A19 road, leading to Teesside and North Tyneside, is also 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east. The A1M motorway, which connects to Newcastle and the South, is about 2.5 miles (4 km) west. Newbottle even has a special landing area for helicopters!

What Does the Name Newbottle Mean?

The name Newbottle comes from an old Saxon word, 'New Battle'. This means 'new settlement'. The village has been around since the year 1050, making it very old!

The earliest time Newbottle was mentioned in writing was in 1183. It appeared in a book called the Boldon Book. This book also talked about the nearby area of Houghton-le-Spring.

A Look at Newbottle's Past

In the 1800s, Newbottle was home to three pottery factories. There was also a mill that ground corn. The Russell family, who were lawyers from Sunderland, were also important in the village. There's even a house named Russell today.

Newbottle was once a busy mining area. In 1762, Lord Lumley recorded 16 coal mines, known as the "Newbottle Group." Later, in 1822, the Nesham family sold their coal mines to the Earl of Durham for a lot of money. The last of these mines closed in 1956.

The Success Pit Disaster

One of the Nesham coal mines, called the Success pit, had a terrible accident on June 2, 1815. The mine was very deep, about 108 fathoms (almost 200 meters). An explosion happened, sending a huge cloud of dust into the air. Many miners tried to escape but were overcome by dangerous gases. Out of 72 men and boys underground, only 15 survived. This was a very sad day for the village.

Village Life and Changes

The local church, St Matthews, was built in 1886. It replaced an older chapel from 1850. The center of the village is a special area with old stone houses.

Newbottle is close to Herrington Country Park. This park is great for walking, picnics, model boating, and cycling. It's about a mile (1.6 km) north of the village.

Over the years, Newbottle has changed. Some local businesses, like the Co-operative store and Post Office, have closed. Their buildings have been used for new developments.

Newbottle used to be a separate area, or 'township', with its own chapel. In 1866, it became a separate civil parish. But in 1937, it joined with Houghton-le-Spring and East and Middle Herrington. In 1931, about 6,811 people lived in the parish.

Saving the Trees

Since 2005, Newbottle has been in the news quite a bit. This is because about 7,000 trees, which are part of the Great North Forest, were at risk. Developers wanted to cut them down to build 20 new football pitches, parking, and other facilities.

People in the community started a campaign called "Save Our Trees!" On June 29, 2006, some people started cutting down trees. The local community quickly went to court in London. A judge stopped the tree cutting with an emergency order.

However, in 2009, the plans for the football pitches were allowed to go ahead. Work started in January 2010. In April 2011, a brand new football training facility, supported by the Football Association, officially opened. Famous football players like Sir Trevor Brooking and Jordan Henderson attended the opening. This big event was even on the front page of the Sunderland Echo newspaper!
