Newington's History

Later, in 1828, the Nevitt family bought the house and a large piece of land (about 1,000 acres). They lived there until the house burned down in 1875.
The Railway Station
In April 1872, a railway station opened on the property. It was first called Long Branch Station, then Accotink, and finally Newington. This station closed in 1971. Today, a special historic marker, put up in 2005, helps people remember where it once stood.
Mount Air Plantation
Another important historical spot in Newington is the remains of the Mount Air plantation. This land was first given to Dennis McCarty in 1727. The main house at Mount Air was destroyed by fire in 1992, but you can still see its ruins. The Fairfax County Park Authority now owns these ruins and helps people learn about the site. Another historic marker was placed there in 2006.
