Website City of Newport

Newport is a city located in Lincoln County, Oregon, in the United States. It became an official city in 1882. The name "Newport" was first used when a post office opened there in 1868. The city was named after Newport, Rhode Island.

In 2020, about 10,256 people lived in Newport. This was a small increase from its population in 2010.

The land where Newport now stands was originally home to the Yacona tribe. Their history in the area goes back at least 3,000 years. White settlers started making homes there in 1864. The town was named by Sam Case, who also became its first postmaster.

Newport has been the main government center, or county seat, for Lincoln County since 1952. Voters decided to move the county government from Toledo to Newport.

The city is also famous for several attractions. These include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Nye Beach, and two lighthouses: Yaquina Head Light and Yaquina Bay Light. You can also visit the Newport Sea Lion Docks, the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center, and Rogue Ales. Newport is the end point of U.S. Route 20, which is the longest road in the United States. It starts all the way in Boston.

NOAA also has staff at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. They help with fisheries science for Alaska and the Northwest. Other research vessels, like the R/V Oceanus and R/V Elakha, are also based at the center.

Newport is also home to the largest fishing fleet on the Oregon Coast. This means many fishing boats operate from Newport, bringing in a lot of seafood.
