Exploring Newport's Location
Newport is located about 591 feet (180 meters) above sea level. You can find it along Swan Creek Road, just east of Interstate 75. If you're driving, you can take exit 21 (Swan Creek Road) to get there. Another big highway, Interstate 275, ends nearby and runs to the west of the community.
Newport is about 10 miles (16 km) north of the city of Monroe. Other communities close by include Estral Beach to the east, South Rockwood to the northeast, and Carleton to the northwest. There's also an older area called Oldport nearby, but most people now just call the whole area Newport.
Waterways and Post Office Services
The community is named after Swan Creek, a stream that flows through the middle of Newport. It travels about 5 miles (8 km) east before emptying into Lake Erie. A smaller stream, Little Swan Creek, runs just south of the community.
The Newport post office is located at 8463 Swan Creek Road. Its 48166 ZIP Code covers a much larger area. This includes parts of Berlin Charter Township, Frenchtown Charter Township, and Ash Township. Other places using this ZIP Code are Stony Point, the village of Estral Beach, the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station, and parts of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area.
Local Schools in Newport
Most students in Newport attend schools within the Airport Community Schools district. However, some students in the southwestern part of the community go to Jefferson Schools.
Newport's Past: A Look at History
Newport was first settled by French people around 1830. They called it Rivière aux Signes, which means Swan Creek. By 1836, several sawmills were built along the creek. The name Newport came about because of its location near Lake Erie, which was like a new port.
In 1837, when Michigan became a state, Newport became part of the new Ash Township. Later, in 1867, Newport and the eastern part of Ash Township were reorganized into Berlin Township.
Churches and Cemeteries
Newport is home to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, which was started in 1882. Before that, there was an earlier church mission dating back to 1838. The church building you see today is at 8125 Swan Creek Road.
There are two St. Charles Cemeteries in Newport. The "old" St. Charles Cemetery was established in 1851, but it has a grave from as far back as 1802! This small cemetery is no longer used for burials. The current St. Charles Cemetery is located a bit north along North Dixie Highway.
Post Office and Railroad History
Newport got its first post office on August 16, 1836. It closed for a short time in 1841 but reopened in 1842. The current Newport post office opened on January 15, 1904, and is still in operation today. In the early 1970s, it became a branch of the Monroe postal service.
Newport also used to have its own railroad station. It was used by several railway companies, including Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, Michigan Central Railroad, and Detroit and Toledo Shore Line Railroad. While there's no active station today, two railroad lines still run through Newport. One is operated by Norfolk Southern Railway, and the other by Canadian National Railway. The original station building was moved and restored. It is now used as an educational building for the nearby Newport Community Church.
