Places in Berlin Charter Township
This township includes several smaller communities. Each has its own unique features.
Estral Beach
Estral Beach is a small village. It is located in the southeastern part of the township. It sits right along the shore of Lake Erie. Even though it is a village, it still works with the township for some services. In 2020, about 403 people lived in Estral Beach.
Newport
Newport is an area without official borders. It is in the southwest part of the township. Newport has its own post office with the 48166 ZIP Code. Many places in the southern part of Berlin Charter Township use Newport as their mailing address. The Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station is also located in this area.
Oldport
Oldport (sometimes called Old Port) is another community without official borders. It is located where North Dixie Highway and Swan Creek Road meet. This area was first settled around 1830. It was originally named "Newport." Later, when a railway station named Newport opened nearby, this community changed its name to Oldport.
South Rockwood
South Rockwood is a village in the northern part of the township. It is right next to the border of Wayne County. The village is also close to the city of Rockwood. South Rockwood has its own post office with the 48179 ZIP Code. In 2020, about 1,587 people lived in South Rockwood.
Geography and Nature
Berlin Charter Township is in the northeast corner of Monroe County. It shares borders with other townships and cities.
Borders and Rivers
To the south, it borders Frenchtown Township. To the west, it borders Ash Township. The Huron River forms most of the northern border. Across the river are Brownstown Township and the cities of Rockwood and Flat Rock. These are all in Wayne County.
Land and Water
The township covers a total area of about 37 square miles (96 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 32 square miles (83 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 5 square miles (13 square kilometers), is water. This means about 13.56% of the township's total area is water.
Natural and Historic Sites
Parts of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area are found within Berlin Township. This is a great place for nature and wildlife. The township also has two places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One is the Detroit River Light, a lighthouse located in the water near the mouth of the Detroit River. The other is the Jefferson Avenue–Huron River Bridge. This bridge crosses the Huron River and connects Berlin Township to Brownstown Township. It is special because it spans across two different counties.
