Newville is a small town, called a borough, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located west of the city of Carlisle. In 2020, about 1,376 people lived there. Newville is part of the larger Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan statistical area.

Newville is found in the western part of Cumberland County. It sits near Big Spring Creek. This creek flows into Conodoguinet Creek, which is part of the larger Susquehanna River system.
The borough is surrounded by other townships. North Newton Township is to the north and west. West Pennsboro Township is to the south and east.
Main Roads and Travel Routes
Several important roads pass through Newville. Pennsylvania Route 641 runs through the town as Main Street. If you go west on this road, you'll reach Newburg in about 9 miles. Going east for about 11 miles will take you to Carlisle, which is the county seat.
Pennsylvania Route 233 (High Street) crosses PA 641 in the middle of town. This road goes north about 16 miles to Landisburg. It also goes southeast about 5 miles to Interstate 81 near Dickinson. Another road, Pennsylvania Route 533, leads southwest from Newville about 11 miles to Shippensburg.

A Look at Newville's Past
Newville was first established in 1790. It was called "New Village" back then. The local Big Spring Presbyterian church owned the land and decided to create a town by selling plots of land.
The first plots were sold to several people, including Samuel Finley and William McElwain. Newville was part of a larger township until 1817. That's when it officially became its own borough.
Growth and Development
In 1837, the Cumberland Valley Railroad came through the area. This helped the town grow. By 1874, Newville expanded its borders to include the homes and businesses that had developed along the railroad tracks.
The Newville Post Office has been serving the community for a long time. It was first set up in the year 1800.
In 2010, the historic parts of Newville were recognized. The Newville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means its important buildings and areas are protected.

Newville is the hometown of some notable individuals.
Randall D. Shughart
On May 4, 2005, the U.S. Congress passed a law. It named the post office in Newville after Randall D. Shughart. He was a U.S. Army Sergeant First Class.
Shughart received the Medal of Honor for his brave actions. He lost his life during the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia in 1993. His story is shown in the 2001 movie Black Hawk Down. This film is based on a book by Mark Bowden.
