Nintendogs (Japanese: ニンテンドッグス, Hepburn: Nintendoggusu) is a popular video game made for the Nintendo DS handheld system. In Nintendogs, you get to adopt and care for your very own virtual dog. It's like having a real pet, but right on your game console!

When you start the game, you can choose a specific type of dog. Then, you get to give your new furry friend a special name. Your main goal is to keep your dog happy and healthy.

Nintendogs: Your Virtual Pet Game

Caring for Your Digital Dog

Taking care of your dog in Nintendogs is a big part of the fun. You need to make sure your dog has food and drinks. If your dog behaves well, you might even get to give them a special treat, like a dog biscuit or a jerky.

You can also keep your dog clean by washing them. Taking your dog for a walk is another important activity. This helps them stay active and happy.

Teaching Tricks and Entering Contests

One of the most exciting parts of Nintendogs is teaching your dog cool tricks. You can teach them to sit, roll over, or even shake paws! Once your dog learns tricks, you can enter them into different contests.

There are three main types of contests in the game:

  • Agility Trial: Your dog runs through an obstacle course.
  • Disc Competition: Your dog catches a flying disc.
  • Obedience Trial: Your dog performs tricks and follows your commands.

You can find out more about how to compete in these contests by looking at your in-game care books, which are found under the "Supplies" section.

Different Dog Breeds and Game Versions

Nintendogs came out in four different versions. Each version started with a different set of dog breeds available from the beginning. These versions include:

  • Dalmatian and Friends
  • Chihuahua and Friends
  • Labrador and Friends
  • Dachshund and Friends

Even though each version starts with different dogs, you can unlock all the dog breeds in every version of the game. You unlock new dogs by earning more "trainer points" as you play and care for your pets.

You can only have three dogs living at your home at one time. If you want to get more dogs, you can drop off one of your current dogs at the "Dog Hotel." You can have up to five dogs staying at the Dog Hotel at any given time.

Important Tips for Trainers

It's very important to play with your dogs every day. If you don't play the game for a long time, your virtual dog might get lonely and could even run away! So, remember to check in on your furry friends daily to keep them happy and safe.

The Next Adventure: Nintendogs + Cats

Because Nintendogs was so popular, a sequel was created! This new game was called Nintendogs + Cats. It was released for the Nintendo 3DS system in 2011. This version let you care for both dogs and cats!
