Noccundra is a small, quiet town located in the Shire of Bulloo in Queensland, Australia. It's known as a "locality," which means it's a specific area, often rural, that includes a town. The town was once called Nocundra. Before 2020, the wider area was known as Nockatunga.

In 2021, only 16 people lived in the Noccundra area.

Where is Noccundra?

Noccundra is found on the banks of the Wilson River. It is about 145 kilometers from Thargomindah. The town is part of a large farming property called Nockatunga Station.

A Glimpse into the Past

The name Noccundra comes from Aboriginal words. Nocka means water, and tunga means smell. This name was first used for a large pastoral area in 1866.

The Famous Noccundra Hotel

The town of Noccundra began in 1882. This was when the Noccundra Hotel, also known as the Noccundra Pub, was built. This special hotel was made from sandstone. The stone was dug up from Mount Poole in New South Wales. It was then brought all the way to Noccundra by camel train! Imagine camels carrying huge stones across the land.

The town's post office opened in 1890. It was called Nocundra Post Office back then. It closed its doors in 1933.

In 2020, the Queensland Government made some changes. They renamed the larger area of Nockatunga to Noccundra. This was done to match the name of the town itself.

Life in Noccundra Today

The Noccundra Hotel on Wilson Street is the only building in town that is lived in. It is home to three permanent residents. This old stone hotel is very important to the area's history. It is a place where many community events happen. These include the Noccundra Rodeo and a big ball held every two years.

Behind the hotel, there is an airstrip. This allows planes to land and take off.

A special memorial for Andrew Hume is located on the western side of the hotel.
