Norm Maracle's Hockey Journey
Starting in Junior Hockey
Norm Maracle began his hockey career in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades. He played for them from the 1991–92 season until 1993–94. In his final WHL season, he was recognized as the best goalie in the league. This earned him the Del Wilson Trophy.
Before that great season, the Detroit Red Wings picked Maracle in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 126th player chosen overall.
Playing Professionally
Time with the Detroit Red Wings
In 1994, Norm Maracle signed with the Detroit Red Wings. They sent him to their minor league team, the Adirondack Red Wings, in the AHL. For the next two seasons, he played very well in the AHL. He had many wins and a high save percentage. However, the Red Wings had many good goalies, so he wasn't called up to the NHL team right away.
Years later, in 2018, Maracle was honored. He was added to the Adirondack Hockey Hall of Fame. This was a special award for his time with the team.
During the 1997–98 season, Maracle was the main goalie for Adirondack. He then got a chance to play for the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL. He played four games and had a great record of two wins, zero losses, and one tie. The Red Wings won the Stanley Cup that season. Norm was in the team picture and received a Stanley Cup ring. However, his name wasn't put on the Stanley Cup because he didn't play enough games.
For the 1998–99 season, Maracle became the backup goalie for the Red Wings. He played in 16 regular season games. He had six wins, five losses, and two ties. His save percentage was very good at 91.8%. He also played in two playoff games that year.
Moving to the Atlanta Thrashers
In 1999, the Atlanta Thrashers picked Norm Maracle in the NHL Expansion Draft. This meant he would play for the new team. The 1999–2000 season was the Thrashers' first year in the NHL. Norm started more games than any other goalie on the team. He finished the season with four wins, 19 losses, and two ties.
Norm earned the nickname "Miracle." This was because even though he wasn't always a top starter, he sometimes had amazing games. He even had three games where he made over 50 saves!
For the 2000–01 season, Maracle played mostly for the Orlando Solar Bears. This was Atlanta's minor league team in the IHL. He had a fantastic record of 33 wins, 13 losses, and three ties. He also had eight shutouts, which was a team record. He helped the Solar Bears win their only Turner Cup championship. Because of his strong play, he also appeared in 13 games for the Thrashers that season.
His last NHL game was on November 10, 2001. After that, he spent the rest of the 2001–02 season with the Chicago Wolves. This was the Thrashers' new minor league team in the AHL. He was the starting goalie there.
By the 2002–03 season, Norm decided to look for new opportunities. He signed with a team in Russia, the Magnitogorsk Metallurg.
Playing Hockey in Europe
Norm Maracle played for Metallurg Magnitogorsk in Russia for the 2003–04 season. He played in 46 games there.
In 2004, he joined another Russian team, Avangard Omsk. With this team, Norm won the European Cup Championship. He was the main goalie for Avangard in the 2005–06 season as well.
For the 2007–08 season, Maracle moved to Germany. He signed with the Iserlohn Roosters in the DEL. Fans loved him there, especially for his fun moves on the ice, like breakdancing!
Norm later played for HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in Austria during the 2009–10 season. He then returned to Germany to play for Kölner Haie.
In July 2010, Maracle signed with Starbulls Rosenheim, a team in Germany's second-tier league. He was their top goalie for two seasons. In May 2012, the Starbulls announced that Norm would not be returning to the team. This marked the end of his professional hockey career.
