North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) is an important group that helps manage fishing in a big part of the Atlantic Ocean. It makes sure that fishing is done in a way that protects fish for the future. This includes areas like the North Sea, Irish Sea, Nordic Seas, Barents Sea, and White Sea.

NEAFC was started in 1980. Its main goal is to keep fish populations healthy for a long time. This helps both the environment and the people who rely on fishing. The area NEAFC covers is huge, stretching from Greenland all the way to Portugal. However, the Baltic Sea and the Danish straits are managed by other groups. After Brexit, the United Kingdom's fishing in the North Sea is also regulated by this commission.

Who Are the Members of NEAFC?

NEAFC works with different countries and groups to manage fishing. These are called "Contracting Parties" because they have agreed to follow NEAFC's rules.

Other Countries That Work With NEAFC

Some other countries are not full members but still work with NEAFC to help manage fishing. These are called "Co-operating Non-Contracting Parties."
