How Atherton Became a Town

In 1923, the nearby town of Menlo Park wanted to include Fair Oaks. However, Fair Oaks decided to become its own town instead. This new town was named Atherton. This decision meant that the area we now call North Fair Oaks was left as an unincorporated area. This means it is not officially part of a city.

The Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct

A large water pipe system, called the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, runs through North Fair Oaks. This system brings water to the San Francisco Peninsula. It was built at an angle that crosses the streets of the community.
