History of North Loup
How North Loup Began
In 1871, a group of people called Seventh Day Baptists from Wisconsin came to Valley County. They were looking for good places to start new communities. In May 1872, they set up a settlement near where North Loup is today.
Soon after, in 1873, a post office and a general store were opened. This helped the community grow. The town of North Loup was officially formed in 1877.
The Railroad Arrives
In 1880, the Union Pacific Railroad built a train line from Grand Island to St. Paul. This made it easier for people in Valley County to send and receive goods by train.
The next year, North Loup and another town called Ord agreed to help pay for the railroad to come through their towns. They raised $9,000 for this project. The train connection to North Loup was finished in 1882.
Growth and Challenges
When the railroad arrived, North Loup grew very quickly for about four years. The number of people living in the village doubled in just one year, reaching 200 residents. This growth slowed down in 1886 when the train line was extended all the way to Ord, the county seat.
From 1877 to 1890, the Loup valley had many wet years. This brought many new settlers who used the Homestead Act to claim land for farming. But after 1890, there were several years of drought until about 1896.
Farmers had to try growing different crops during this dry period. They experimented with plants like winter wheat and alfalfa. In the North Loup valley, one successful new crop was popcorn.
Popcorn Days Celebration
Because popcorn farming worked so well, North Loup started a special event. In 1901, they held their first "Popcorn Days" celebration. This fun tradition continues every August, bringing people together to celebrate the village's unique history with popcorn.
Population Changes Over Time
North Loup continued to grow a lot between 1900 and 1920. By 1915, more than 600 people lived there. The population reached its highest point in 1930, with 643 residents.
After World War II, the number of people living in North Loup started to go down. By 1959, there weren't enough students to keep the local school district open. It joined with the school district in Scotia, a nearby town.
The 2010 Flood Event
On June 12, 2010, North Loup experienced a major flood. A private dam called Bredthauer Dam, located about 4.5 miles upstream, broke because of very heavy rain.
Water flooded rural areas of Valley County and then reached North Loup. Water was about eight inches deep and flowed down Main Street. The entire village had to be evacuated for safety until the floodwaters went down.
