Northeast Piscataquis is a very large, mostly wild area in Piscataquis County, Maine, in the United States. It's called an "unorganized territory" because it doesn't have its own local government like a town or city. Instead, it's managed by the county and state.

In 2020, about 304 people lived in Northeast Piscataquis. It's known for its beautiful natural spaces, including Maine's highest mountain.

The Story of Williamsburg

Northeast Piscataquis also has an interesting history, including a town that no longer exists as a separate place. The town of Williamsburg used to be a distinct community. However, in 1940, it was officially dissolved and became part of Northeast Piscataquis.

Williamsburg was located in the southern part of Piscataquis County. It was about 17 miles northeast of Dover-Foxcroft and west of Brownville. A river called the West Branch of the Pleasant River flowed through the town.

One notable person from Williamsburg was Lieutenant Colonel Walter Goodale Morrill.

People from Europe first settled in this area in the early 1800s. Williamsburg officially became a town in 1820. Its population changed quite a bit over the years:

  • In 1870, there were 176 residents.
  • By 1880, it grew to 444 people.
  • In 1900, the population dropped to 117, making it the smallest incorporated town in the county at that time.
  • In 1910, it had 138 residents.
  • By 1920, only 82 people lived there.
  • The last census for Williamsburg as a separate town was in 1930, when it had just 67 residents.

Eventually, due to its small and shrinking population, Williamsburg was incorporated into the larger unorganized territory of Northeast Piscataquis.
