Novaggio is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It's a lovely place nestled in the mid-Malcantone valley.

History of Novaggio

Early Times and Old Buildings

Novaggio was first mentioned in old records in the year 1244. But people lived there much earlier! Graves found in nearby areas like Pazz and Traversagna show that there was a settlement during the Iron Age. The Iron Age was a time when people started using iron to make tools and weapons.

In the Early Middle Ages, which was a long time ago, a monastery (a place where monks live) from Como owned land in Novaggio. The big church in Como, called the Como Cathedral, also owned a farm and a mill there. In 1294, another monastery, the Humiliati monastery of Astano, had property in the village.

Novaggio, along with nearby towns like Curio, Banco, and Bedigliora, used to be part of a special area called a kastlanei. This was like a small region ruled by a local official. There were probably some old forts or strongholds around Novaggio, but we don't know exactly where they were or what they looked like.

Churches and Hospitals

The Church of S. Siro was first talked about in 1352. It became a parish church (a church that serves a local community) in 1632. The building you see today was built in 1625.

Later, in the late 1800s, a local family started an Evangelical church community. They built their own church in 1902 and even started an Evangelical school.

In 1905, a doctor named Fausto Buzzi-Cantone built a large house called Villa Alta. His partner, Alice Meier, opened a small hospital in the villa's park. People from Novaggio could get free medical care there. Later, the Swiss government bought the villa and turned it into a military hospital in 1922.

Work and Life in the Past

In the 1800s, people found silver and gold in the rocks around Novaggio! They started mining these precious metals and built a special oven to process the ore. Before this, most people in Novaggio made a living from farming. Because there wasn't much land for farming, many people had to leave Novaggio to find work elsewhere. Today, most people who live in Novaggio work in the nearby valleys.
