Nuri Kazım Şahin (born 5 September 1988) is a German and Turkish football manager and former player. He played as a midfielder. He was most recently the head coach of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Şahin started his playing career at Borussia Dortmund. He played there for six years, including a loan spell at Feyenoord. He helped Dortmund win the Bundesliga title in 2011. After that, he joined Real Madrid in 2011. In 2012, he went on loan to Liverpool. He then returned to Dortmund, first on loan and later permanently. He stayed at Dortmund until 2018. He finished his playing career in 2021 after playing for Antalyaspor in Turkey.

Born in Germany, Şahin played for the Turkish national team from a young age. He made his senior international debut in 2005. He played 52 games for Turkey over 12 years. He was part of the team for UEFA Euro 2016.

After he stopped playing, Şahin became a manager. He coached Antalyaspor from 2021 to 2023. He then became the head coach of Borussia Dortmund in 2024. He left that role in January 2025.

Şahin was born in Lüdenscheid, Germany. His parents are Turkish. He grew up in a nearby town called Meinerzhagen. He became a German citizen in 2011. He married his cousin Tuğba Şahin in 2007. They had a son named Ömer in 2011. Nuri Şahin can speak five languages fluently: Turkish, German, English, Dutch, and Spanish. In 2018, he started studying at Harvard Business School.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting Out

Şahin began playing football when he was six years old. He played for a local club called RSV Meinerzhagen. After seven seasons there, he joined the professional club Borussia Dortmund in 2001.

Time at Borussia Dortmund

On 6 August 2005, Şahin made history. At 16 years and 334 days old, he became the youngest player to ever play in the Bundesliga. This record was later broken in 2020. On 25 November 2005, he also became the youngest player to score a goal in the Bundesliga. He scored for Borussia Dortmund against 1. FC Nürnberg. This record was also later broken in 2020.

In 2007, Şahin went on a one-year loan to Feyenoord in the Netherlands. He played under his former Dortmund coach, Bert van Marwijk, there.

Şahin returned to Dortmund and became a very important player. In the 2009–10 season, he started 33 out of 34 matches. He scored four goals and made eight assists. In the 2010–11 season, he helped Dortmund win the Bundesliga title. He scored six goals and made eight assists that season. Because of his great performance, he was voted the Bundesliga player of the season.

Moving to Real Madrid

On 9 May 2011, Şahin announced he was leaving Dortmund. He signed a six-year contract with the Spanish club Real Madrid. The transfer fee was €10 million. He said he joined Real Madrid because of coach José Mourinho and the chance to play for such a famous club. He made his first official appearance for Real Madrid on 6 November 2011. He had been out with injuries before that. On 20 December, he scored his first goal for Real Madrid in a cup match.

Loan to Liverpool

On 25 August 2012, Real Madrid loaned Şahin to Liverpool for a season. He wore the number 4 shirt. He made his Liverpool debut on 2 September 2012. On 26 September, he scored his first two goals for Liverpool in a League Cup game. Three days later, he scored his first Premier League goal and set up two others. During his five months at Liverpool, Şahin scored three goals and made three assists in 12 matches. He later said he was not truly happy at either Real Madrid or Liverpool, but he enjoyed playing with captain Steven Gerrard.

Back to Borussia Dortmund

On 14 January 2013, Şahin returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan. He said he felt like he belonged there. His return made manager Jürgen Klopp very happy. He made his first league appearance back with Dortmund eight days later. On 16 March 2013, Şahin scored two goals in a 5–1 win against SC Freiburg.

On 27 July 2013, Şahin helped Dortmund win the 2013 DFL-Supercup against their rivals Bayern Munich. On 26 October 2013, he scored a goal in the "Revierderby" against Schalke, which Dortmund won 3–1.

In April 2014, Borussia Dortmund made Şahin's return permanent. They paid about €7 million for him. He faced some injuries in the 2014–15 and 2015–16 seasons. After a long break, he returned to play in February 2016. He got his old shirt number 8 back. In April 2017, Şahin extended his contract with Dortmund until 2019.

Time at Werder Bremen

On 31 August 2018, Şahin joined another Bundesliga club, Werder Bremen. He signed a two-year contract. He played as a defensive midfielder. In his first season, he played 23 games, scoring one goal and assisting another. In the 2019–20 season, he played regularly at first. However, he later lost his spot in the team. He suffered a hip injury in June 2020, which kept him out for a long time.

Playing for Antalyaspor

In August 2020, Şahin moved to the Turkish club Antalyaspor. He signed a two-year contract. He made his first game for the club on 13 September. He played 42 games in his first season, helping the team finish seventh in the league.

On 5 October 2021, Şahin was offered the chance to become the head coach of Antalyaspor. He was a player at the time. On 16 October 2021, it was announced that Şahin would only be the head coach. This meant he officially ended his playing career.

International Football

Şahin won the bronze ball award at the 2005 Under-17 World Cup in Peru. The Turkish team finished fourth in that tournament. Even though he was born in Germany, Şahin chose to play for Turkey. He said he felt more Turkish.

Şahin played his first senior international game for Turkey on 8 October 2005. It was a friendly match against Germany, the country where he was born. He came on as a substitute and scored three minutes later. At 17 years, 1 month, and 3 days old, he became the youngest player and goalscorer for Turkey.

Şahin did not play for the national team between June 2014 and March 2016. He was then called back for a friendly game against Austria. He was chosen for the UEFA Euro 2016 squad in France. This was his only major tournament with the senior team. He played as a substitute in a 3–0 loss to Spain. This game was his 50th cap for Turkey.

Şahin announced his retirement from international football in November 2017. He was 29 years old. He had played 52 games and scored two goals for Turkey.

Coaching Career

In May 2015, Şahin became an assistant coach at his childhood club, RSV Meinerzhagen. His brother, Ufuk, played for the team.

Coaching Antalyaspor

On 5 October 2021, Şahin became the head coach of Antalyaspor. He had been a player for the club. The previous manager had been dismissed.

In December 2021, Şahin's team gave Trabzonspor their first league loss of the season. Throughout the rest of the season, Antalyaspor went on a long unbeaten run in the league. They finished in seventh place, securing their spot in the top league.

Coaching Borussia Dortmund

On 29 December 2023, Şahin left Antalyaspor. On the same day, he and his former teammate Sven Bender became assistant managers for Edin Terzić at Borussia Dortmund. They signed a one-year contract. In the summer of 2024, Şahin was named the head coach of Dortmund. He was removed from his coaching role in January 2025 after a series of poor results.
