Nuri Şahin (born 5 September 1988) is a famous German-Turkish football manager and former player. He used to play as a midfielder. He was most recently the head coach for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Nuri Şahin started his playing career at Borussia Dortmund. He played there for six years, including a loan spell at Feyenoord. He helped Dortmund win the Bundesliga title in 2011. After this, he joined Real Madrid in 2011. In 2012, he went on loan to Liverpool. He later returned to Dortmund, first on loan, then permanently. He played for Dortmund until 2018 before moving to Werder Bremen. He finished his playing career in 2021 after playing for Antalyaspor.

Born in Germany, Şahin played for Turkey in international matches. He started playing for the national youth teams (under-16 level) and made his senior team debut in 2005. He played 52 games for Turkey before he stopped playing internationally in 2017. After retiring as a player, Şahin became a coach. He was named the manager of the Turkish club Antalyaspor in October 2021.

Nuri Şahin was born in Lüdenscheid, Germany. His parents are Turkish. He grew up in a town nearby called Meinerzhagen. In 2011, he also became a German citizen.

He married his cousin, Tuğba Şahin, in November 2007. They had a son named Ömer in September 2011 in Madrid. Nuri Şahin is very good at languages. He can speak Turkish, German, English, Dutch, and Spanish. In 2018, he even started studying at Harvard Business School.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting in Football

Nuri Şahin began playing football when he was just six years old. He played for a local club called RSV Meinerzhagen. After seven seasons there, he joined the professional club Borussia Dortmund in 2001.

Time at Borussia Dortmund

On 6 August 2005, Şahin made history. He became the youngest player ever to play in the Bundesliga at 16 years and 334 days old. This record was later broken in 2020. On 25 November of the same year, he also became the youngest player to score a goal in the Bundesliga. He scored for Borussia Dortmund against 1. FC Nürnberg. This record was also broken later in 2020.

In 2007, Şahin went on a one-year loan to Feyenoord in the Netherlands. He played under his old coach from Dortmund, Bert van Marwijk.

Şahin came back to Dortmund and played a big part in the 2009–10 season. He started 33 out of 34 games. He scored four goals and made eight assists. In the 2010–11 season, he helped Dortmund win the Bundesliga title. He had a great season, scoring six goals and making eight assists. Because of his strong performance, he was voted the Bundesliga player of the season.

Moving to Real Madrid

On 9 May 2011, Şahin announced he was leaving Dortmund. He then signed a six-year contract with the Spanish club Real Madrid. Real Madrid paid €10 million for him. He said he joined Real Madrid because of coach José Mourinho and the chance to play for such a famous club.

He made his first official appearance for Real Madrid on 6 November 2011. He came on as a substitute in a big 7–1 win against Osasuna. He had been out with injuries since August that year. On 20 December, he scored his first goal for Real Madrid in a 5–1 win against Ponferradina in the Copa del Rey. His performance in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match was highly praised.

Loan to Liverpool

On 25 August 2012, Real Madrid loaned Şahin to Liverpool for a season. He wore the number 4 shirt. He made his Liverpool debut on 2 September 2012 against Arsenal. On 26 September, Şahin scored his first two goals for Liverpool in a 2–1 win against West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup. Three days later, he scored his first Premier League goal and set up two others in a 5–2 win against Norwich City. During his five months at Liverpool, Şahin scored three goals and made three assists in 12 matches.

Coming Back to Borussia Dortmund

On 14 January 2013, Şahin returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan. He said he felt like he belonged there "100 per cent" as a footballer and a person. He also said he only wanted to play for Dortmund. His return made manager Jürgen Klopp very happy.

He played his first league game back with Dortmund eight days later. He came on as a substitute in a 5–0 win against Werder Bremen. On 16 March 2013, Şahin scored two goals in a 5–1 victory for Dortmund against SC Freiburg.

On 27 July 2013, Şahin helped Dortmund win the 2013 DFL-Supercup 4–2 against their rivals Bayern Munich. On 26 October 2013, he scored a goal for Dortmund in the "Revierderby" against Schalke, which Dortmund won 3–1.

On 10 April 2014, Borussia Dortmund made Şahin's return permanent. He stayed with the club until 2018.

Time at Werder Bremen

On 31 August 2018, Şahin joined another Bundesliga club, Werder Bremen. He signed a two-year contract. He played 23 games in his first season, scoring one goal and assisting another. In the DFB-Pokal cup, his team reached the semi-finals. In the 2019–20 season, he played regularly at first. However, he later lost his spot in the team. He played 17 games that season before a hip injury sidelined him.

Playing for Antalyaspor

In August 2020, Şahin moved to the Turkish club Antalyaspor. He signed a two-year contract. He made his first game for the club on 13 September, coming on as a substitute in a 2–0 win. The next week, he started his first game for Antalyaspor. He played 42 games in his first season, helping the team finish seventh in the league.

On 5 October 2021, Nuri Şahin became the head coach of Antalyaspor. He was first offered to be a player-manager. But on 16 October 2021, he decided to focus only on coaching. This meant he officially ended his playing career.

International Football

Şahin played for the Turkish national youth teams. He won the bronze ball award at the 2005 Under-17 World Cup in Peru. Turkey finished fourth in that tournament.

Şahin is the youngest player to have ever played and scored for the senior Turkish national team. He scored a goal in his very first game, which was against Germany, the country where he was born.

Coaching Career

In May 2015, Şahin also became an assistant coach at his childhood club, RSV Meinerzhagen. His brother, Ufuk, played for the team.

Coaching Antalyaspor

On 5 October 2021, Nuri Şahin became the head coach of Antalyaspor. He had been a player for the club until then. He took over after the previous manager was let go.

In December 2021, Şahin's team gave Trabzonspor their first league loss of the season. Trabzonspor had been undefeated until then. Şahin's team then went on a long streak of undefeated matches. They finished the season in seventh place, making sure the team stayed in the top league.

Coaching Borussia Dortmund

On 29 December 2023, Şahin left Antalyaspor. On the same day, he and his former teammate Sven Bender became assistant managers for Edin Terzić at their old club, Borussia Dortmund. They signed a one-year contract. In the summer of 2024, Nuri Şahin was named the head coach of Borussia Dortmund. He was removed as manager in January 2025 after a series of poor results.
