Nurul Izzah binti Anwar (born 19 November 1980) is a Malaysian politician. She served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Permatang Pauh from 2018 to 2022. Before that, she was the MP for Lembah Pantai from 2008 to 2018. She is the daughter of Anwar Ibrahim, who is the current Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Nurul Izzah is currently a Co-chairperson of the Secretariat of the Special Advisory Body to the Minister of Finance. She started this role in February 2023. She is a member of the People's Justice Party (PKR). This party is part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) group. She has also been the Vice President of PKR since July 2022, a role she held before from 2010 to 2018.

Early Life and Education
Nurul Izzah was born on 19 November 1980. Her father is Anwar Ibrahim, who was once the Deputy Prime Minister and is now the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Her mother, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was also a Deputy Prime Minister.
Before becoming a politician, Nurul Izzah studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Universiti Tenaga Nasional. She finished her degree in 2003. Later, she went to Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. There, she earned her master's degree in International Relations. She focused on Southeast Asia Studies. Even before she became an MP, Nurul Izzah was a strong supporter of human rights. She cared especially about people who were unfairly imprisoned.
Political Journey
Starting in Politics
Nurul Izzah's political journey began when the People's Justice Party (PKR) was formed in 1999. She played an important part in setting up the party. She became a Vice President of the party in November 2010. She also worked as the party's Election Director.
In December 2018, Nurul Izzah announced that she was stepping down as the party's vice president. However, she continued to serve as the MP for Permatang Pauh.
She has been a founding member of groups like the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Caucus. She also helped start the Women's Caucus. Nurul Izzah has worked to change laws in Malaysia. For example, she helped to remove old emergency laws and the Internal Security Act.
Nurul Izzah also helps lead the Centre of Reform, Democracy and Social Initiatives. She founded Akademi Manusiawi, which is a training center for future activists and politicians. She has worked with groups like the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM). She has spoken up for human rights in Malaysia on a global stage, including at the 55th Commission on Human Rights in Geneva.
She also writes for the Malay newspaper Sinar. She shares ideas about making positive changes in the country.
Returning as Vice President
On 20 July 2022, Nurul Izzah was appointed back as a Vice President of the PKR party. This happened almost four years after she had resigned from the role.
Serving as a Member of Parliament
Representing Lembah Pantai (2008–2018)
In the 2008 general election, Nurul Izzah ran for the Lembah Pantai seat in Kuala Lumpur. Many thought her opponent, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, would win easily. However, Nurul Izzah won with 21,728 votes, beating Shahrizat's 18,833 votes. This was a big surprise in the election.
She won the Lembah Pantai seat again in the 2013 election. She received 31,008 votes, winning by a small margin of 1,848 votes.
Representing Permatang Pauh (2018–2022)
In May 2018, Nurul Izzah ran for the Permatang Pauh seat in Pulau Pinang. She won this election with a large majority of 15,668 votes. She received 35,534 votes.
As the MP for Permatang Pauh, Nurul Izzah started several programs to help her community. These programs focused on improving public services and helping people.
PAUH Compost Initiative
This program is called “Sisa Sifar Demi Alam Sekitar,” which means "Zero Waste for the Environment." It teaches people how to reduce food waste by turning it into compost.
PAUH Penang Pintar
"Penang Pintar" means "Smart Penang." This program offers free tuition classes for students from families with lower incomes. It helps students prepare for important exams like UPSR, PT3, and SPM. It also sends teachers to help at tahfiz schools.
PAUH Agro Tech
This project focuses on modern farming methods that do not use harmful chemicals. It aims to help with food security and protect the environment from climate change. It also helps farmers and consumers.
PAUH Women’s Project
The Permatang Pauh Women’s Project helps local women learn new skills. These skills can help them find jobs and improve their lives. This project works with Yayasan MyPrihatin, which helps single mothers and housewives. They even make school uniforms, and some of the money from sales goes to a program called MyHeart.
Political Activism
Nurul Izzah is known for speaking up for political and civil rights. She especially supports people who are unfairly held in prison. She works to make Malaysia more democratic.
She has often talked about the need to improve prisons in Malaysia. She also believes that Members of Parliament should have more power to create laws. Since 2011, Nurul Izzah has introduced several proposed laws. These include bills about education, hate crimes, and repealing old laws.
Her work in her community focuses on helping those who need it most. Some of her projects include the Removing Obstacles to Cervical Screening (ROSE) program. She also led the Permatang Pauh Women's Project to help women learn new skills. She also worked on a study about poverty in Permatang Pauh.
Nurul Izzah also supports the Palestinian people. She has often shown her support for their fight for freedom. She has called for an end to the Israeli occupation. In October and December 2023, she joined groups to send messages to the United States Embassy, the European Union (EU), and the British High Commissioner to Malaysia. These messages expressed concern about the conflict in Gaza. Many MPs and groups signed these messages.
In July 2021, Nurul Izzah worked with Professor Fatimah Kari to publish a report on the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). This study looked at different ways poverty affects families in Permatang Pauh. It considered not just money, but also social and environmental factors. This report helped the government plan to improve how they measure poverty in the country.
Personal Life
Nurul Izzah married Raja Ahmad Shahrir on 9 May 2003. They had two children, Raja Safiyah and Raja Harith. They divorced in January 2015.
She later married Yin Shao Loong on 5 August 2022. She also has a stepchild from Yin's previous marriage.
