Before that, she was the MP for Lembah Pantai from 2008 to 2018. She is the daughter of Anwar Ibrahim, who is the current Prime Minister of Malaysia.

From February 2023 to February 2024, Nurul Izzah was a Co-chairperson of a special advisory group for the Minister of Finance. She is a member of the People's Justice Party (PKR). This party is part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) political group. She has also been the Deputy President of PKR since May 2025. She served as Vice President of PKR from 2010 to 2018 and again from 2022 to 2025.

Early Life and Education

Nurul Izzah is the daughter of Anwar Ibrahim, who was once the Deputy Prime Minister and is now the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Her mother, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was also a Deputy Prime Minister and led the People's Justice Party. Nurul Izzah's grandfather, Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, was also a Member of Parliament.

Before she became a politician, Nurul Izzah studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She graduated from Universiti Tenaga Nasional in 2003. Later, she continued her studies in the United States. She earned a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. Her studies focused on International Relations, especially about Southeast Asia. Before becoming an MP, Nurul Izzah was a strong supporter of human rights. She was particularly interested in helping people who were unfairly imprisoned for their beliefs.

Political Career

Important Roles in Government

Nurul Izzah briefly worked as a Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister on Economics and Finance. She was also part of the Public Accounts Committee from 2018 to 2022. This committee checks how the government spends money. She also spoke for her party on matters related to women, family, and community development.

She was an active member of a group called the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia. This group worked to improve conditions in all places where people are held, like prisons. From December 2018 to July 2019, she was the Chairperson of the Consideration of Bills Select Committee. This committee reviews new laws before they are passed.

Leadership in the People's Justice Party

Nurul Izzah's political journey started when the People's Justice Party (PKR) was formed in 1999. She played a key role in setting up the party. For many years, she was a high-ranking Vice President and the party's Election Director.

In December 2018, Nurul Izzah decided to step down from her role as the party's vice president. She also resigned as the head of the party's Penang branch. However, she continued to serve as the Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh.

Nurul Izzah helped create groups like the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Caucus and the Women's Caucus in Parliament. She also held a position as Honorary Treasurer for the Inter-Parliamentary Union Malaysia. She proposed a law in Parliament to cancel old emergency declarations in the country. This included getting rid of the Internal Security Act. Many of her ideas were later adopted by the Prime Minister.

Nurul Izzah is also a director for the Centre of Reform, Democracy and Social Initiatives. She founded Akademi Manusiawi, which is a training center for future activists and politicians. She has worked with many groups to support human rights. These include the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM). She has spoken internationally about the rights of political prisoners in Malaysia.

She also writes for the Malay newspaper Sinar. In her articles, she shares positive ideas about making changes for the better. In July 2019, Ramkarpal Singh took over her role as chairperson of the Consideration of Bills Select Committee.

Returning as Vice President of PKR

On July 20, 2022, Nurul Izzah returned to her role as Vice President of the PKR party. This happened after the party elections. She was appointed along with two other new leaders, Awang Husaini Sahari and Saraswathy Kandasami. She had previously resigned from this role nearly four years earlier.

Election Campaigns

In the 2008 general election, Nurul Izzah ran for the Lembah Pantai seat in Kuala Lumpur. She won the election with 21,728 votes. Her opponent, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, received 18,833 votes. Nurul Izzah's victory was a big surprise because her opponent had held the seat for a long time. This election saw many changes in Parliament. Later, her father, Anwar Ibrahim, also returned to politics by winning a by-election for the Permatang Pauh seat.

In November 2010, Nurul Izzah was chosen as one of the vice-presidents of the People's Justice Party. She won her parliamentary seat again in the 2013 election. In this election, she faced a strong challenge from Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.

Political Activism

Nurul Izzah became known for actively supporting political and civil rights. She especially helped people who were unfairly imprisoned for their beliefs. She worked hard for big changes to make Malaysia more democratic.

Nurul Izzah was part of a parliamentary group that focused on improving all places where people are held, like prisons. She always stressed the need to make prisons better across the country. She also strongly supported making Parliament more powerful. She wanted Members of Parliament to have more say in making laws. Since 2011, Nurul Izzah has introduced several proposed laws. These included bills about skills education, hate crimes, and removing old laws that limited freedom.

Her work in her local area focused on helping the most vulnerable people. These notes were sent to the US Embassy, the European Union (EU), and the Office of the British High Commissioner to Malaysia. Many Members of Parliament and non-governmental organizations signed these notes.

This study looked at different ways people experience poverty in Permatang Pauh. It went beyond just money and also looked at social, political, and environmental factors. The goal was to understand poverty in a complete way. Six months later, Mustapa Mohamed, a former minister, announced that the government planned to update how it measures poverty. This was in response to Nurul Izzah's study.
