Where is Obertilliach?
Obertilliach is in a part of Austria called East Tyrol. It sits in a high valley near the upper part of the Gail River. This valley is known as Lesachtal.
The town is surrounded by mountains. To the north are the Gailtal Alps, which are part of the Lienz Dolomites. To the south are the Carnic Alps.
Just down the valley to the east is another town called Untertilliach. The mountain peaks to the south form the border with Italy. Specifically, they border the Cadore region in Italy.
Life in Obertilliach
The main part of Obertilliach is built around the St Ulrich parish church. There are also smaller villages nearby, like Bergen, Leiten, and Rodarm.
The weather here is an Alpine climate. This means it has cold winters but often gets lots of sunshine.
Long ago, people in Obertilliach mostly worked in farming. Today, the town relies a lot on tourism. It's a very popular spot for people who love sports.
Sports and Activities
Obertilliach is a favorite place for biathletes and cross-country skiers. These are winter sports that combine skiing with shooting.
In the summer, many people come here for hiking and mountaineering. It's also a great place for paragliders to fly through the air.
A Look at History
People from a group called the Bavarians first settled in this area around the late 1000s. Even before that, in early medieval times, Italian farmers from Cadore used the southern slopes to graze their animals.
Early Rulers
In the 700s, a leader named Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria gave the upper Gail Valley to Benedictine monks. These monks were from a place called Innichen Abbey.
Around 1075, the area of Tilliach was taken over by the Prince-bishops of Brixen. These were powerful church leaders who also ruled lands.
Later, around 1100, a noble family called the House of Gorizia became very strong in the Tilliach region. They lived in Lienz. Other powerful groups, like the Prince-bishops of Salzburg and the dukes of Carinthia, also tried to control the area.
Becoming Part of Tyrol
In 1500, the last leader of the Counts of Gorizia died. Their lands around Lienz then became part of the Habsburg empire. Emperor Maximilian I added these lands to the County of Tyrol.
There were often disagreements with the Republic of Venice about the border. These arguments ended when the border was set along the Carnic mountain peaks.
The Prince-Bishops of Brixen still claimed rights in the Tilliach valley until 1803. However, they couldn't really control this distant region. The town of Obertilliach as we know it today was officially formed in 1852.
