The name "Oconee" comes from the Oconee people. They were a Native American tribe who spoke a language called Hitchiti. They lived in central Georgia between 1692 and 1715. The Oconee tribe first lived in a place called Oconee Old Town. Later, in the early 1700s, they moved closer to the Chattahoochee River. You might see their name spelled in different ways, like Ocone or Oconi.
