A Look Back: Odessa's History
Odessa first got its own post office in 1898. The town was mainly settled by people called Volga Germans. These settlers came from a region near the Volga River in Russia. They decided to name their new home after the city of Odesa, which is in Ukraine. Odessa officially became an incorporated town on September 25, 1902.
Where is Odessa Located?
Odessa is found in the southeastern part of Lincoln County, Washington. It's situated close to the border with Adams County. The town's exact location is at 47.3332 degrees North latitude and -118.6882 degrees West longitude.
Roads and Rivers in Odessa
Two important roads meet in Odessa: Washington State Route 21 and Washington State Route 28. State Route 21 connects Odessa to U.S. Route 2 to the north and Interstate 90 to the south. State Route 28 helps people travel east and west to other towns in Lincoln County and Grant County.
The Crab Creek river flows through Odessa. State Route 28 generally follows the path of this creek in the area. Odessa is also located in a unique area called the Channeled Scablands. This landscape was formed by huge floods, known as the Missoula Floods, at the end of the last ice age.
The United States Census Bureau says that Odessa covers a total area of about 0.82 square miles (2.10 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Most of the people living in Odessa (95.5%) were White. A small number were Native American (1.3%) or from other races. About 2.6% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
About 23.9% of the households had children under 18 living there. Many households (50.5%) were married couples. The average household had 2.23 people, and the average family had 2.78 people. The average age of people in Odessa was 50.8 years old. About 21.9% of residents were under 18, and 26.4% were 65 or older.
