History of Ogden
Ogden was officially planned and laid out in 1866. The town got its name from William B. Ogden, who was an important person in the railroad business. A post office opened in Ogden in 1871, and the town officially became a city in 1878.

Transportation in Ogden
Ogden is located along U.S. Route 30, an important highway. The original Lincoln Highway (Walnut Street) used to go right through the center of town. However, a new four-lane highway was built in 1965 that goes around the south side of Ogden.
The old part of Highway 30 in the business district was repaved. There were even some footprints in the old cement that were saved before the new paving! Another important road, U.S. Route 169 (First Street), used to cross Highway 30 in Ogden. These main roads helped Ogden's businesses grow because of all the traffic passing through.
A major east-west railroad line, once part of the Chicago & North Western railroad, also runs through Ogden. This line was a key connection between Chicago and the western United States. Before 1956, there was a train station in Ogden where people could catch passenger trains. The railroad also had an office that handled packages and freight for the town. Today, this line is part of the Union Pacific railroad.
