A Look at Old Guildford's Past
Old Guildford and the nearby area of Guildford got their names from the Earl of Guildford.
Early Aboriginal Life
Before European settlers arrived, the Dharug people lived in small groups across the Cumberland Plain. This included the land where Old Guildford is today. The Bidjigal clan, a group within the Dharug people, lived around the area now known as Guildford.
European Settlement Begins
In 1837, a man named Lieutenant Samuel North was given a large piece of land here. It was about 640 acres (2.6 square kilometres). He named his property Guildford because he had connections to the Earl of Guildford.
Even though the property's name changed to Orchardleigh in 1843, the name Guildford stuck to the whole region. A small village grew around Woodville Road. By 1869, a school had opened, and a church was built in the 1880s.
How Old Guildford Got Its Name
In 1876, a railway station was built a bit north of the original village. It was named Guildford because it was the closest settlement. The area around this new railway station grew much faster than the old village. Eventually, the new settlement took over the name Guildford. This is why the original village became known as Old Guildford.
