Early Life and Education

Omar Suleiman was born in Qena, Egypt, on July 2, 1936. He studied at several important schools. He went to the Egyptian Military Academy. He also studied at the Frunze Military Academy in the Soviet Union. Later, he attended Ain Shams University and Cairo University in Egypt. These studies helped him prepare for his future roles.

Military Career

Suleiman began his military service in 1954. He rose through the ranks to become a Major General. He was involved in several important conflicts. These included the North Yemen Civil War, the Six-Day War, and the October War (also known as the Yom Kippur War). His time in the army gave him a lot of experience.

Leading Egypt's Intelligence

From 1993 to 2011, Omar Suleiman was the Director of the General Intelligence Directorate. This is Egypt's top intelligence agency. His job was to gather information and protect Egypt's security. He worked in this role for nearly two decades.

Becoming Vice President

In January 2011, President Hosni Mubarak appointed Omar Suleiman as the Vice President of Egypt. This was a new role for him. He served as Vice President for a short time. He left office in early February 2011, when President Mubarak also stepped down.

Later Life and Passing

In 2012, Omar Suleiman wanted to run for president of Egypt. However, he was not allowed to be a candidate. After President Mubarak left office, Suleiman was not seen in public very often. He passed away on July 19, 2012. He died in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, from a heart attack while getting medical treatment.
