Omari Akhmedov (born October 12, 1987) is a professional mixed martial artist from Russia. He is known for competing in the Light Heavyweight division. Omari has fought in major organizations like the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

About Omari Akhmedov
Omari Akhmedov was born in Kizlyar, a town in Dagestan, Russia. He grew up in a Lak family. Like many kids in Dagestan, Omari started training in freestyle wrestling when he was young. He became very good at wrestling before he began his career in mixed martial arts (MMA). Before MMA, Omari also had successful careers in other martial arts. These included combat sambo, Russian hand-to-hand combat, and Russian pankration.
Omari's Mixed Martial Arts Journey
Starting His Career
Omari Akhmedov had his first professional MMA fight on January 30, 2010. He won this fight by using a move called a rear-naked choke. After this first win, Omari built an impressive record of 12 wins and only 1 loss. This strong start helped him get noticed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in September 2013.
Fighting in the UFC
Omari signed a contract to fight four times in the UFC. His first UFC fight was on November 9, 2013, against Thiago Perpétuo. It was an exciting fight where both fighters landed big punches. Omari won the fight by knockout. This win also earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus award. After this fight, Omari decided to move to a lighter weight class called welterweight.
In his first welterweight fight, Omari faced Gunnar Nelson on March 8, 2014. He lost this fight in the first round by a submission move called a guillotine choke.
Omari then fought Mats Nilsson on January 3, 2015, and won by a unanimous decision. This means all the judges agreed he won the fight.
On June 6, 2015, Omari fought Brian Ebersole. Omari won this fight by TKO (Technical Knockout). Ebersole could not continue after the first round because of a knee injury from Omari's kick.
Omari faced Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos on April 16, 2016. It was another back-and-forth fight. Omari lost in the third round by TKO. However, their exciting fight earned both fighters another "Fight of the Night" bonus.
On November 27, 2016, Omari stepped in on short notice to fight Kyle Noke. He won this fight by unanimous decision.
Omari fought Abdul Razak Alhassan on May 28, 2017. He won the fight by split decision, meaning some judges thought he won, and others thought his opponent won, but the majority sided with Omari.
On December 30, 2017, Omari faced Marvin Vettori. This fight ended in a majority draw. This means most judges scored it as a tie.
Omari was scheduled to fight CB Dollaway in September 2018, but he had to pull out of the fight.
He returned to the octagon on March 9, 2019, to fight Tim Boetsch. Omari won this fight by unanimous decision.
On September 7, 2019, Omari fought Zak Cummings and won by unanimous decision.
His next fight was against Ian Heinisch on December 14, 2019. Omari won again by unanimous decision.
On August 8, 2020, Omari faced Chris Weidman. He lost this fight by unanimous decision.
Omari was set for a rematch with Marvin Vettori in December 2020, but he was removed from the fight.
He then fought Tom Breese on January 16, 2021. Omari won this fight in the second round with an arm-triangle submission.
Omari's last UFC fight was against Brad Tavares on July 10, 2021. He lost this fight by split decision. After this fight, it was announced that Omari was no longer fighting in the UFC.
Joining the Professional Fighters League (PFL)
After leaving the UFC, Omari joined the Professional Fighters League (PFL). His first PFL fight was on October 27, 2021, against Jordan Young. He lost this fight by TKO in the third round.
PFL 2022 Season
Omari started his 2022 PFL season strong. On April 23, 2022, he faced Viktor Pešta and won by knocking him out in the first round.
He then fought Teodoras Aukštuolis on June 17, 2022. Omari won this fight by choking Teodoras out with an arm-triangle choke in the second round.
Omari was supposed to fight Antônio Carlos Júnior in the semifinals of the Light Heavyweight tournament on August 5, 2022. However, Antonio got injured, and Josh Silveira replaced him. Omari won against Josh Silveira by unanimous decision.
In the finals of the Light Heavyweight tournament on November 25, 2022, Omari faced Rob Wilkinson. Omari lost this fight when the doctor stopped the fight after the second round due to a cut.
PFL 2023 Season
Omari was set to begin his 2023 PFL season on April 1, 2023, against Will Fleury. However, Omari had to withdraw from the fight due to an injury.
Global Fight League
Omari was scheduled to fight Derek Brunson in a new league called Global Fight League (GFL) on May 24, 2025. However, all GFL events were later cancelled.
