Operation Orient (also known as Fall Orient in German) was a secret plan during World War II. It was a big idea for Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan to meet up. Their goal was to connect their territories, mainly across the Middle East.

This plan was different from the North African Campaign. That campaign focused on taking Tobruk and securing North Africa. Operation Orient had a much larger goal. It aimed to control the important oil fields in the Middle East. After that, German forces would link up with Japanese armies. This would happen after Germany had defeated the Soviet Union.

The Big Plan

The plan for Operation Orient was very ambitious. It would only start after Germany had won several key battles. First, they needed to capture the Caucasus region. They also had to secure all of North Africa. Finally, they needed to completely defeat the Soviet Union.

Once these steps were done, German armies would attack from two directions. One group would move from Libya through Egypt. Another group would advance from Bulgaria through Turkey. These armies would then meet in the Middle East. From there, they would march together through Iran and Iraq. Their final meeting point was planned to be in India. This is where they hoped to achieve a major victory over Britain.

Why the Plan Failed

Operation Orient was a huge and complex plan. However, it never actually happened. Germany faced major defeats in late 1942 and early 1943. The most important losses were at the Battle of Stalingrad and the Second Battle of El Alamein. These defeats made it impossible for Germany to continue with the operation. The plan was then cancelled.
