The Order of Arts and Letters of Spain (which in Spanish is Orden de las Artes y las Letras de España) is a special award given by the Spanish government. It was created on July 24, 2008. This award is given to people and groups, both from Spain and other countries. They receive it for doing great things to share Spanish culture and show a good image of Spain. This includes working in writing, art, or other creative fields.
The King of Spain gives out the Order of Arts and Letters of Spain. He does this through a special official order called a Royal Decree. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (which is like a government department for schools, arts, and sports) suggests who should get the award. If the award is for someone from another country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (the department that deals with other countries) is asked for their opinion first. The head of the culture ministry usually presents the award.
This award has only one level, and it is purely for honor. It does not come with any money. The rules for this award are set out in a special document called Royal Decree 1320/2008. César Antonio Molina, who was the Minister of Culture at the time, started this award.
