Exploring Ormeau Hills: Its Geography
Ormeau Hills is located in a beautiful area. A small part of its eastern edge runs alongside the Pacific Motorway.
The eastern side of Ormeau Hills has flat land, about 10 to 30 meters above sea level. This is where most of the houses are built. As you move towards the center, the land becomes more hilly, reaching up to 130 meters high. This area has larger properties, often called rural residential. The western part of Ormeau Hills is very mountainous, rising to 250 meters. This higher land is mostly undeveloped.
The Story Behind the Name: Ormeau Hills' History
The name Ormeau Hills comes from the nearby area called Ormeau. The original Ormeau got its name from Ormeau House. This was the estate of Major William Alexander Jenyns Boyd, who grew sugar in the 1860s. His first wife, Isabella, was born on Ormeau Road in Belfast, Ireland. The word ormeau is French and means young elm tree.
