Orval Howard Hansen (August 3, 1926 – November 2, 2017) was an American politician from Idaho. He served as a congressman for three terms. He was a member of the Republican Party. He represented Idaho's 2nd district from 1969 to 1975.
Early Life and Education
Orval Hansen was born in Firth, Idaho, on August 3, 1926. His family later moved to Idaho Falls, where he grew up. He finished Idaho Falls High School in 1944.
After high school, Hansen joined the U.S. Navy. He served from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. Part of his service was in the Pacific on an aircraft carrier called the USS Saratoga. Later, he was part of the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel.
After his military service, Hansen went to the University of Idaho in Moscow. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1950. He then studied law at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.. He received his law degree in 1954. He also earned advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in political science, from George Washington University.
Political Career
Orval Hansen's political journey began in the Idaho state legislature. He served four terms in the Idaho House. He was even the House Majority Leader from 1961 to 1962.
In 1962, he first ran for a seat in the U.S. Congress. He won the Republican nomination but lost the main election. He then returned to the Idaho House for two more years. After that, he served one term in the Idaho State Senate.
Hansen ran for Congress again in 1968. This time, he won the Republican primary election. He was then elected to represent Idaho's 2nd congressional district. He served three terms as a congressman.
In 1974, he lost his bid for re-election in the Republican primary. He was defeated by George Hansen, who was not related to him. George Hansen had held the seat before Orval Hansen. After his time in Congress, Orval Hansen returned to working as a lawyer. He also started a research organization called the Columbia Institute for Political Research.
Personal Life
Orval Hansen was married to June Duncan, who was from England. They had seven children together. In 2006, his son, Jim D. Hansen, ran for the same congressional seat. However, Jim Hansen was not elected.
Orval Hansen passed away at his home in Boise on November 2, 2017. He was 91 years old and died from complications related to cancer.
