Osorno la Mayor is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Palencia province of Spain. It is part of the Castile and León region. Did you know that the city of Osorno in Chile, and its province, are actually named after this Spanish town?

About Osorno la Mayor

Osorno la Mayor covers about 88.6 square kilometers. Around 1,500 people live there. Smaller villages like Villadiezma, Las Cabañas de Castilla, and Santillana de Campos are part of Osorno la Mayor's area. They are like tiny neighborhoods belonging to the main town.

The town is easy to reach. It has good access to major highways. These include the Autovía Camino de Santiago and the Autovía Cantabria-Meseta. There is also a train station in Osorno la Mayor.

Where is Osorno la Mayor?

Osorno la Mayor is located on the eastern side of the Palencia province. It is in a region known as Tierra de Campos. The town is about 50 kilometers from Palencia, which is the capital city of the province.

Osorno la Mayor is seen as an important crossroads. This is because of its location. It sits on a natural path that connects the northern plateau to the Bay of Biscay. It also links the Burgos area to León and Galicia.

Local Economy and Jobs

For a long time, the main job in this area was agriculture. Farmers mostly grew grains. However, this type of farming is not as common now.

Today, jobs in construction, public works, and services are growing. This is because Osorno la Mayor is close to two major highways. These roads connect Burgos to León and Palencia to Santander. Train lines also follow these routes. The town also has an industrial park. This park helps create many jobs and boosts the local economy.

Waterways and Canals

The land around Osorno la Mayor gets water from two rivers. These are the Valdavia River and the Boedo River. The town also uses water from the Canal de Castilla. This is an old canal system.

A special part of the canal, called Lock number 15, is in Osorno la Mayor. This lock helps boats move between different water levels. Sadly, the buildings that were once at this lock were taken down. This happened before the site was made a protected historical place.

A Look at History

We know that Osorno la Mayor was once a Roman settlement. This is thanks to old objects found in the area. These objects suggest it was mainly a military base. They have been found over many years.

More recently, archaeologists have done organized digs. They found signs of human life that might be from the Mesolithic Age. This means people lived here a very long time ago! The area became more important during the Middle Ages. Its location likely played a big part in this growth.

Today, only a few things remain from the past. The town hall building is one example. Parts of the local church also show its history. These include the baptismal font and a beautiful baroque altar.

Holiday Celebrations

Osorno la Mayor has several important holidays. One big celebration is for Our Lady of Ronte. Another is the Pilgrimage of St. Pantaleón. The festivities of San Miguel de los Santos are also popular. They happen on the first weekend of July.

Easter is also celebrated with great excitement. The town has one of the most impressive Easter celebrations in the whole province.
